The Minimalist Mindset: Packing Light, Travel Hacks, & Protecting Your Peace
With summer break right around the corner, I don't know about you, but I can already feel that crazy shift in energy! The kids are getting ready to step out of school mode, our schedules are shifting, and everywhere you look, people are trying to figure out how to plan, pack, and survive their summer travel.
If the thought of booking flights, packing bags, or managing summer logistics makes you feel anxious or overwhelmed before you’ve even left your house, I want you to take a deep breath.
In this episode of Cafecito Conversations, Kairym and I sat down to unpack how to cultivate a Minimalist Mindset. We’re talking about how to travel light, not just in your suitcase, but in your spirit, so you can actually enjoy your summer instead of just surviving it!
The Planner vs. The Flow: Finding Peace in the Chaos
I’ll be the first to admit: when it comes to summer travel, I like to be in flow, but I also know how easy it is to get overwhelmed by all the options!
Kairym, on the other hand, is our ultimate savvy global explorer. She starts hunting for travel deals, setting flight alerts on Google and Kayak, and mapping out itineraries way ahead of time!
Sitting down together, we compared our totally different travel styles, from whether Airbnb or hotels give you a better reset, to how we spent our childhood summers (I shared how much I loved spending my summers in Puerto Rico with my grandparents, camping at the beach and making memories with family).
No matter what your summer looks like, whether you’re flying across the world to see family, taking a road trip, or staying local, we talked about how to focus on what actually matters to you. Is it resting? Creating memories with your kids? Unplugging? Once you get clear on your priority, all the planning noise just fades away.
Kairym’s Savvy Packing Hacks (And My Photo Outfit Trick!)
If you’re the type of person who packs five suitcases for a three-day trip just "in case," you need to listen to Kairym’s section of this episode! She dropped some incredible hacks for traveling carry-on only:
The Ziploc Bag Method for Kids: Packing each day’s outfit into a gallon Ziploc bag (and sitting on it to squeeze the air out!) so your kids' bags stay completely organized and airtight.
The 3-Pair Shoe Rule: Traveling in your sneakers, packing one pair of versatile espadrilles or heels for night-to-day wear, and one simple pair of flats or slides.
No Jeans on Vacation: Why jeans are actually the heaviest, most uncomfortable thing to pack, and why flexible wide-leg trousers or leggings are your best friend.
I also shared my personal secret weapon for packing: my Post-It Note & Outfit Photo Album trick! I lay out my outfits day-by-day with Post-its, take a quick photo on my phone, and label them in a dedicated photo album so I never have to stress about what to wear while I'm on vacation.
A Word for Your Soul: What Really Matters This Summer?
Before you jump over to watch or listen to the full episode, I want to leave you with a grounding thought that I shared at the end of our cup:
Before you spend another dollar or pack another bag, sit down and ask yourself: What really matters to me this season?
You don't have to do 10 different things or book an exhausting schedule to make your family happy. Summer shouldn't be something we just try to survive—it’s a season meant for connection, rest, and joy.
And hey—don't forget to clap when your airplane lands! (You know that’s our proud Caribbean tradition, but it’s really just a beautiful act of gratitude for making it safe).
Step into this season with peace, travel light in spirit, and remember: little by little, bees build their hive.
